Medical First Aid

Description:
The course syllabus covers the mandatory minimum requirements prescribed
in Regulation Vl/4 and Section A-Vl/4 of STCW'95.
Objectives:
Trainees who successfully complete the course will be able to demonstrate
the required minimum standard of competence set out in Table A-VI/4-1
of STCW'95 for seafarers who may be designated to provide medical
first aid on board ships.
Course Outline:
o General principles of first aid - immediate action in an emergency
o First aid kit - contents and use.
o Body structure and functions.
o Examination of the patient.
o Toxicological hazards aboard ships.
o Spinal injuries.
o Bums and scalds.
o Effects of exposure.
o Fractures, dislocations, strain and muscular injuries.
o Medical care of rescued persons.
o Cardiac arrest, drowning, asphyxia and resuscitation.
o Management of shock.
o Positioning of casualty.
o Radio medical advice.
o Pharmacology'.
o Sterilization.
Entry Standards:
This course is open to those seafarers who have successfully completed
training in Elementary First Aid and have achieved the standard
of competence set out in Table A-VI/1-3 of Section A-VI/I of STCW95.
Duration: 21 hours
