Medical Care

Description:
The course syllabus covers the mandatory minimum requirements prescribed
in Regulation Vl/4 and Section A-Vl/4 of STCW'95.
Objectives:
Trainees who successfully complete the course will be able to demonstrate
the required minimum standard of competence set out in Table A-VI/4-2
of STCW'95 for seafarers who may be designated to take charge of
medical care on board ships.
Course Outline:
o General Principles of First Aid - immediate action in an emergency.
o First aid kit - contents and use.
o Care of casualties :
- head and spinal injuries
- injuries of the ear, nose, throat and eyes.
- External and internal bleeding
- Burns scalds and frostbite
- Fractures, dislocations and muscular injuries
- Wounds, wound healing and infection
- Pain relief
- Techniques of sewing and clamping
- Management of acute abdominal conditions
- Minor surgical treatment
- Dressings and bandaging
o Aspect of nursing.
o Diseases
- sexually transmitted
- tropical and infectious.
- prevention
o Alcohol and drug abuse.
o Dental care.
o Gynecology, pregnancy and childbirth.
o Medical care of rescued persons, including distress, hypothermia and exposure.
o Death at sea.
o External assistance - radio advice.
o Hygiene.
o Maintaining records.
o Medicines and medical equipment.
o Surgical equipment and supplies.
Entry Standards:
This course is open to those seafarers who have successfully completed
training in Medical Emergency - First aid and have achieved the
standard of competence set out in Table A-VI/4-1 of Section A-VI/4
of STCW'95.
Duration: 40 hours
Class capacity: 20 trainees
