Maritime English (ME)



Description:
The course syllabus covers the mandatory minimum requirements prescribed in Section A- II/4 of STCW'95.

Objectives:
Trainees who successfully complete the course will be able to demonstrate the required minimum standard of competence set out in STCW'95:
- Part B-VI/1 to teach basic maritime English
- Develop trainees' ability to use English to lower intermediate language level
- Improve trainees' competence in English
- Prepare trainees' for developing the full knowledge, understanding and proficiency in English required by STCW 1995 Code (more Standard Marine Communication Phrases)

Course Outline:

Core Section 1 Elementary level English for all functions & level

Elementary level Part 1
o Ask for and give personal data
o Describe crew roles and routines
o Name types of vessels
o Describe parts of a vessel
o Describe the location and purpose of safety equipment
o Discuss navigational routes and geographic locations
o Understand standard helm orders
o Name positions on board;
o Ask for and give directions on board and ashore
o Express personal likes and dislikes
o Discuss leisure time on board

Duration: 12 days

Elementary level Part 2
o Describe routine operations on board
o Understand Standard engine orders
o Express personal preferences
o Discuss food on board
o Order meals
o Understand commands in emergency situations on board
o Check supplies
o Provide quantities, weights and prices
o Discuss cargo handling procedures
o Compare vessel details
o Describe equipment
o Describe visitors on board
o Describe weather conditions
o Understand forecasts

Duration: 13 days

Elementary level Part 3
o Report events from past voyages
o Report details of incidents at sea
o Simulate VHF communications for distress and urgency messages
o Explain personal injuries at sea
o Request medical assistance
o Check task completion in routine operations
o VHF communications regarding bunkering
o Produce external written and spoken communications to request and give advice
o Understand instructions and give explanations
o Practice VHF exchange procedures
o Discuss future events
o Negotiate future plans

Duration : 19 days

Core Section 2 Intermediate Level English for all functions & level

Intermediate level Part 1
o Demonstrate an understanding of the relevance of STCW95 English requirements to all seafarers
o Discuss and confirm travel arrangements for joining ship
o Describe procedures at international airports
o Discuss aspects of safety and risk in the workplace
o Describe meteorological conditions

Duration: 14 days

Intermediate level Part 2
o Explain stages in processes
o Describe and explain global trends in shipping
o Comprehend and respond to written and oral communications
o Demonstrate awareness of how cross-cultural issues can affect team work at sea
o Comprehend and participate in communications by VHF radio, telephone and walkie-talkie

Duration: 15 days

Intermediate level Part 3
o Report recent events
o Describe changes in shipping, ship design and technology
o Give warnings about the potential problems of marine pollution
o Speculate about hypothetical situations
o Deduce possible causes of events
o Establish and explain reasons for break downs or faults

Duration: 15 days
